Jamaican music has always been known for innovative use of previously recorded music, be it recording versions of American or British hits, giving Jamaican music the dub treatment or recording new vocals over old instrumental riddim tracks.

About ten years ago I was rummaging the web for new music, and came across a song with a comment next to it claiming it was "the best song in the world". The song was Reach Out For Me, and the artist was Roy Hamilton. And even though - or maybe even because - I had never heard of him, I decided to download the song to see what was so special about it.

A singer from the Cape Verde islands, off the western coast of Africa, Mayra Andrade has also lived in Cuba, Angola, Senegal, Germany, Brazil and France. And this varied background - especially the African and Brazilian part - is easily heard in her debut album Navega from 2006.
