Song: Annie - I Don't Like Your Band

Ever since her 1999 debut single Greatest Hit, Norwegian electropop artist Annie has been a byword for intelligent and catchy pop music. Actually, if they were to make a film called Catchy Pop Music, I'm pretty sure the soundtrack would have been made by Annie.

The song I Don't Like Your Band is from her second album Don't Stop, released last October. With a driving, dancefloor friendly beat, it has Annie telling her boyfriend

That stuff you play
It sounds so passé
Don't get me wrong, I like you
But I don't like your band

Song: Willie Colón & Hecor Lavoe - Che Che Colé

Band leader Willie Colón and lead singer Hector Lavoe recorded on the Fania label, the spearhead of the New York salsa explosion of the 70's. This song from their 1971 album Cosa Nuestra is one of the greatest New York salsas, and it's insanely catchy and danceable!

So what better way to start the weekend than to put on this song, get in the friday mood, and maybe even dance a little bit.

Album: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy - My Name Is Khan Soundtrack

In Bollywood, the soundtrack is essential to the success of a film. It is usually released a few weeks before the film premiere, and if the soundtrack is poor, people will think twice about buying tickets.

The film My Name Is Khan, which premiered last weekend, is just about as anticipated as Bollywood films get. The Bollywood box office record for biggest opening day was beaten by 30%! The main reason for this is that it features Bollywood's favourite screen couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol together for the first time in eight years, under the direction of Mr. Blockbuster himself, Karan Johar. This

Artist: Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson is a legend. Not just because he was a brilliant blues guitarist and singer, but also because the story of Robert Johnson is filled with more legends than facts.

From just the dry facts, it's difficult to understand what is so important about him. He died in 1938 aged 27, and having recorded only 29 songs. In his lifetime, he wasn't really famous, and none of his songs were even modest hits.

In 1961, an LP compiling most of the 29 songs by the then forgotten Robert Johnson

Song: Roy Hamilton - Reach Out For Me

About ten years ago I was rummaging the web for new music, and came across a song with a comment next to it claiming it was "the best song in the world". The song was Reach Out For Me, and the artist was Roy Hamilton. And even though - or maybe even because - I had never heard of him, I decided to download the song to see what was so special about it.

The intro sounds like run-of-the-mill 60's pop oriented r&b, with strings and a female chorus. But then Roy Hamilton starts singing. A rich, soulful baritone voice very different from most artists of that era. The arrangement is really nice, with piano and

Album: Mayra Andrade - Navega

A singer from the Cape Verde islands, off the western coast of Africa, Mayra Andrade has also lived in Cuba, Angola, Senegal, Germany, Brazil and France. And this varied background - especially the African and Brazilian part - is easily heard in her debut album Navega from 2006.

I first heard of Mayra Andrade after she won the best newcomer prize in the BBC World Music Awards in 2008. I listened through the entire album in one go, and loved it immediately. The word that best describes the music on the album is joy. I dare you to listen to Tunuka and not feel a bit better than you did before you played the song. The short organ solo at 2:30 always makes me smile - no idea why.

You might not understand the Portuguese Creole lyrics, but who cares when the

Likeable Music: An Introduction

These days you can listen to music wherever and whenever you want to - on the radio, your computer, your iPod, or streamed on the web. And the diversity and sheer amount of music at your fingertips is incredible.

With all that music available, it's obvious that there's a lot of great music around that you've never heard about. But how do you find it? If you go jumping around the Internet looking for it, you're far more likely to end up with dirt than diamonds.

And that's where this blog comes in - great music you've never heard before. Unlike the vast majority of music you haven't heard, though, the music presented on Likeable Music is actually likeable. Some of the songs on this blog you'll start liking the first time you hear them, while other songs might need repeated listenings. But even if this blog gives you just one new favourite artist, or one new genre you want to find out more about, or even just a couple of great songs, it has fulfilled its mission.

So that's the purpose of the blog out of the way, but what kind of music will it fill up with? I'll try to cover as wide a field as possible, and feature both old and new music. From hip hop, pure pop, jazz, blues, soul, salsa and dancehall, to less familiar genres like Bollywood soundtracks, soca, raï, fado, grime, bachata and timba. And lots of other stuff that's just great music, regardless of time period and genre.

The first week there will be a new post every day Monday through Friday. After that, every Monday and Thursday I will write about either an album, a song, an artist or something completely else. All posts will include music samples to listen to (if you like the music, please buy it!) and sometimes one or more videos, in addition to suggestions for what to listen to next.

At the bottom of each post are some buttons for you to play with. Depending on whether you liked the post and/or music, you can press either "Likeable", "Average" or "Blergh!" . And if you're a sharing person, you can even give me your (very welcome) feedback below each post.
